The Truth About Sunscreen: SPF, Ingredients & Smart Protection
☀️ Let’s Debunk Some Sunscreen Myths
Myth #1: “It’s cloudy, so I don’t need to wear sunscreen
❌ False!!
Up to 80% of UV rays still get through clouds. Your skin does not care that it’s gloomy outside—it’s still getting exposed.
✨ Translation: If it’s daytime, it’s sunscreen time.
Myth #2: “I have darker skin, I don’t need sunscreen.”
❌ Also false.
Melanin does give some natural protection, but it does not make you immune to skin cancer or sun damage. Plus, sun exposure can worsen hyperpigmentation and dark spots and scars!
✨ Translation: Sunscreen is for every skin tone.
Myth #3: “My makeup has SPF—I’m good.”
👀 Usualllllly not the case!!!
The SPF needs to be at LEAST 30 (40 or 50+ is better…..) and you need more than you think for adequate sun protection.
✨ Translation: Sunscreen first, makeup second. SPF in makeup = a bonus
Myth #4: “Sunscreen is toxic.”
😬 This one gets a lot of airtime online.
The chemical sunscreens approved in the U.S. are considered safe and effective when used as directed. That said, if you’re pregnant, sensitive, or just prefer mineral sunscreen—zinc and titanium are more natural, great options.
✨ Translation: The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear consistently.
Myth #5: “Mineral sunscreen doesn’t work as well.”
❌ Nope.
Mineral sunscreens offer excellent broad-spectrum protection and are especially great for sensitive skin, rosacea, kids, and post-procedure skin. And yes—formulas have come a long way since the chalky days.
✨ Translation: Mineral sunscreen understood the assignment.
Myth #6: “I need sun exposure for vitamin D.”
🌤️ You can still make vitamin D while wearing sunscreen—and intentionally damaging your skin is not the move.
If vitamin D is a concern, supplements and diet are safer, more reliable options.
✨ Translation: Protect your skin first. We can handle vitamin D separately.
Myth #7: “I’m indoors all day, so I don’t need sunscreen.”
❌ Incorrect.
UVA rays go through windows (cars, offices, your favorite coffee shop). This exposure adds up over time—especially on the face, neck, and hands.
✨ Translation: If you’re near windows or driving, daily sunscreen still matters.
