Oak City Dermatology Prioritizes Patient Care

The warm and inviting environment begins the moment one walks through the front door. From a genuine greeting by the kind receptionist to the warmhearted nursing staff to the compassionate doctor herself, Oak City Dermatology cares about its patients and it shows.

Patients tell the staff all the time how they feel cared for when they entrust their health to Oak City Dermatology.

One of the practice’s primary goals these days is the prevention and early detection of skin cancer. Treatment goals are discussed with the patient including best surgical outcomes.

Dr. Maryam Haque, the board-certified dermatologist, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, who has headed Oak City Dermatology since it opened its doors in May 2022, says skin cancer is the leading cause of cancer in this country, and its rates continue to rise steadily.

“Awareness and early detection of skin cancer can be life-saving, and that’s what we’re all about,” said Dr. Haque.

OCD has a surgical suite in its practice, and Dr. Haque has extensive training and experience with surgical dermatology. The practice’s goal is to minimize patient discomfort, reduce the appearance of scars and give patients a positive aesthetic outcome when it comes to skin cancer treatment.

She has rigorous medical and surgical training in thousands of skin conditions and routinely performs skin-cancer surgeries, mole excisions, cyst removals, and removal of other benign tumors.

Dr. Haque and the practice are skilled in treating thousands of skin conditions, and they constantly keep a focus on the latest and most effective treatments and technologies.

The practice also prioritizes community awareness, educating about the damaging effects of the sun, and how the community can take preventative measures to protect against skin cancer.

“We know sun-protective measures work and work well. They are effective in reducing the rise of skin cancer, which we are currently witnessing, so we encourage everyone no matter their skin type to take protective action,” Dr. Haque said.

The Oak City Dermatology practice has a company philosophy, and that’s a message Dr. Haque heard from a mentor that “excellence does not happen by accident.” This philosophy echoes in the practice’s strive for excellence in patient care.

In addition to the prevention, early detection, and curative treatment of skin cancer, the practice also focuses on the treatment of acne patients.

“We help teenagers and young individuals regain their confidence and help them achieve clear skin, which is so rewarding,” said Dr. Haque.

Before returning to the South, Dr. Haque spent 10 years in private practice with concurrent time in the academic world, including at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, which is considered the foremost dermatology department in the nation.

In her spare time, Dr. Haque enjoys time with her husband and three children, exploring the great outdoor parks of Raleigh, traveling, and reading for pleasure.

She is a Louisiana native and earned her undergraduate and medical school degrees at Drexel University. She graduated first in her medical school class and was awarded the coveted Most Outstanding Woman of her graduating medical school class. She performed research in her field at Harvard Medical School as well. She brings that great academic wealth to her practice, and it shows with every patient she treats.
